Chris Gray and Joe Baron AKA Paulo & Rodriguez are the founders of Room Eight Records, Room Eight Productions and also club night Electronic Funk. Bought up on a diet of illegal ware house parties in the late eighties and early nineties, being part of the original “Langtry Crew”, (a group who helped put together some of East Anglia’s most notorious parties in the disused Langtry Hotel) This love of music, soon progressed into producing and so Room Eight was formed as a vehicle for Joe and Chris to release their music. (Room 8 being the number of the hotel room where the original studio was),
A little later came the “Stable” their own studio converted from an old horse racing stable (only in Newmarket.!!). The sound at that time (96-97) was coming from the Sunday scene in London and had been billed as UK Garage.
Their first release as Paulo & Rodriguez “Say what“ cat no: RM8001 appeared on various compilations and has been declared a classic with the vinyl original considered as rare. (MP3 version will be available as are all the catalogue in the download section)
Room Eight continued releasing music in this vein and moved their studio to the Truman Building, Brick Lane, London. Where they collaborated with other producers and singers.
Eight releases later the scene they had been involved in had changed as had their taste, so it was decided to move back to the Stable Studio and release more Soulful disco influenced house music under the guise of Room Eight Productions. It was then they released their big dance floor filler “Fantasy Island” with the sought after quirky” Gills Blues” on the flip side. The follow up “Holding ON” was another great disco soul soaked affair with vocals by Khaki and sax by Phil Marshall.
As mentioned before the club night Electronic Funk , started at the turn of the new millennium ,soon became East Anglias main outlet for the soulful house scene and is still organizing events although not on a weekly basis (their liver couldn’t take it!!)Their DJ Philosophy is “make the Crowd Dance” this sounds obvious but some DJ’s don’t seem to understand their role! Paulo and Rodriguez DJ on a regular basis at other events (check gigs/events)
The Future…………….
Paulo and Rodriguez have added another member to their production team in the name of Mark Fesco ,an amazing musician who has spent much time playing the live circuit and whos influence can be heard on their current and future releases. Using Live musicians seems to be their latest direction and Phil Marshall on Sax also features a lot . Broken Beats is also a direction the guys have been leaning towards but will still be maintaining quality House music.
Also Room 8 Records welcomes our good friend Steve Parr from the home of Soulful house www.faizemusic.com , Steve has always been involved in designing the look of our label and club nights as well as being one of our resident DJ's from the very begining and has now been brought aboard in a PR capacity.
With new members to the team and a renewed lease of life expect to be hearing a lot from these guys .. watch this space….!!! |
